What happened? In our governance system, the Executive Council remains in power as long as it maintains the confidence of the Island Council. Only when the Island Council officially declares a lack of confidence does a change occur. Recently, political support for the current administration diminished. On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the commissioners submitted their resignation. Following this, an emergency meeting was scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 2026, to propose new commissioners. On that same day, it was announced that UPB, MPB, and independent Island Council member Serberie intend to form a new coalition.
The Governor’s Role As chair of the Executive Council, the Governor has specific powers, such as agenda-setting and making proposals. He also promotes collaboration and unity. However, it is not the Governor’s role to form a new government; that responsibility lies with the Island Council and political parties. Informally, he facilitates dialogue and monitors integrity, always staying within legal boundaries.
Impact on Residents Daily services at the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) remain unchanged. Government tasks and services continue as usual. The law is designed to ensure continuity of governance even when commissioners step down.
