By promoting reading among our youth, and as the saying goes, “the more you read, the wiser you are.” Our department—by creating opportunities based on what we stand for, which is Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, together with its Fisheries section through Mr. Byron Boekhoudt, a marine biologist, and the Hadicurari Fishing Center Foundation—has collaborated to create two posters featuring the names of the most popular fish caught in our local waters. Our fishermen play a very important role in this, especially from an educational standpoint. We find it extremely important for this type of valuable information to reach our students. During a meeting with Minister Mr. Geoffrey Wever, who is responsible for the Primary Sector, two posters displaying different fish names were officially presented. These are the fish that our fishermen practically catch on a daily basis during their long journeys out at sea. We can imagine that not everyone who eats fish knows the name or type of each of these specimens. Often, people ask the fisherman to learn a little more about the fish. Sometimes you cannot even imagine where certain fish names derive from. This also aligns perfectly with the “Piskechi” project announced by Minister Geoffrey Wever a few months ago, which is currently running at the Brisas del Mar pier every Saturday, teaching children how to fish.
The intention is to soon distribute these posters to all primary schools so our students can expand their knowledge of our most popular fish. Certainly, teachers will have the opportunity to learn about these types of fish through their names and pass this valuable information on to our students.
