The first Arts and Culture Week a great success

Ban Papia Kultura Nov

The first edition of the ‘Arts and Culture Week’ at the ‘Theater in the Courtyard of SKAL’ was a resounding success. The Arts and Culture Week was well attended by artists, cultural organizations, and the general public. The program consisted of a varied offering of music, art, film, and theater.

The goal of the week was to make art and culture accessible to everyone, bring people together, and stimulate local talent. SKAL aims to help organizations and creators reach new audiences and provide creative individuals with opportunities to connect with one another.

A general overview of the Culture Week

Bari Music
The cultural week began with an intimate jam session led by Wesley “Wèwè” Sint Jago. He shared stories about the traditional history of bari music.

Sip & Paint
Under the guidance of Zahir Ilaria, visitors were able to create paintings while DJ Jewel provided music. Many families and young people attended this activity. The presence of live music and the spontaneous collective experience even during the live broadcast of the Curaçao vs. Jamaica football match — created an energetic and connecting atmosphere.

Improvisational Theater
Reksel Engelhardt and his group hosted an evening of improvisation and humor.
Seven theater groups performed, and members expressed their wish to stay connected with one another.

Film ‘Nos ta Boneiro’
The film ‘Nos ta Boneiro’ by David Martinus attracted more than 100 visitors. After the screening, a panel discussion followed on themes such as identity and the future of Bonaire. The audience was also able to participate in the conversation.

Role of SKAL
The cultural week concluded at the Bonaire Public Library. Under the guidance of Dyoñna Benett and Ziran Chin-On, visitors discussed and shared feedback regarding the role of SKAL. The ideas that emerged during the ‘Ban papia di Cultura’ session will serve as the foundation for SKAL’s Multi-Year Cultural Plan.

Key results of the cultural week
During the week, SKAL’s goals were surpassed. More than 300 visitors participated in the activities. Participants of different ages and backgrounds were able to connect with one another. Six theater creators and seven theater groups were given a stage. Visitors also received information about the island’s music traditions.

SKAL thanks all individuals, organizations, and companies for their contribution to the first Culture Week.
