Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB) is pleased to recognize Cheky Zimmerman and Ilse DeLoyer as the Bonaire Friends for May and June 2026, honoring their kindness, dedication, and the meaningful impact they have made on visitors to Bonaire.
Cheky Zimmerman was nominated by Lisa Phillips from Maryland, United States, who shared a heartfelt story about the special connection she and her husband developed with the local artist after first meeting him in Bonaire in 2019. According to Lisa, what began as an appreciation for Cheky’s artwork evolved into admiration for the person behind the paintings. As an artist herself, she discovered many similarities in their life stories, from growing up on islands and coming from fishing families to both pursuing their passion for art. Lisa and her husband returned to Bonaire in 2025, determined to reconnect with Cheky. During their visit, they were warmly welcomed by Cheky and his family, turning what started as a chance encounter years earlier into a meaningful friendship built on kindness, shared experiences, and a mutual love for art.
The June Bonaire Friend, Ilse DeLoyer, was nominated by Clovis Stair for the exceptional care, professionalism, and personal attention she provides to divers visiting Bonaire. As a dive master, instructor, and boat captain, Ilse was praised for her patience, enthusiasm, and ability to make every guest feel comfortable and welcome. The nomination also highlighted her thoughtful way of offering assistance whenever needed, always with respect and genuine care, allowing guests of all ages and abilities to fully enjoy their diving experience. Her playful personality and genuine connection with guests have created lasting memories for families who continue returning to Bonaire year after year. In the nomination, she was affectionately described as their “Dive Angel” and someone who has become more than a dive guide, a true lifelong friend.
Through the Bonaire Friends initiative, visitors are invited to nominate locals who have made a positive impact during their stay on Bonaire. Each month, TCB recognizes individuals whose actions, talents, and personal connections help create memorable experiences and showcase the true spirit of the island.
“Bonaire’s greatest strength is its people. Whether through art, hospitality, or simply extending genuine kindness, our Bonaire Friends create unforgettable experiences that visitors carry with them long after they leave our island,” said Elesiër Angel, CEO of TCB.
TCB congratulates Cheky Zimmerman and Ilse DeLoyer on being recognized as the Bonaire Friends for May and June 2026 and thanks them for their outstanding contributions to Bonaire’s welcoming spirit. Their stories remind us that it is the people of Bonaire who make the island a truly unforgettable destination.
