The Public Entity of Bonaire (EPB) officially kicked off a Train the Trainers program this week focused on women’s empowerment. The training is intended for professionals who work with vulnerable groups, including young women. The training consists of 5 days of instruction, followed by on-the-job training at three of the participating organizations. Since August of last year, EPB—via the Community and Care Directorate together with the Netherlands-based Stichting Lezen en Schrijven (Reading and Writing Foundation)—has been working on empowering professionals. Last year, more than thirty professionals completed training sessions regarding empowerment, parenting, finances, and work. Through this training, professionals acquire knowledge, skills, and practical tools to better guide individuals toward greater autonomy and economic independence. The training is specifically aimed at young women aged 16 and older, including single mothers who, for instance, face unemployment, debt, domestic violence, and limited opportunities in the areas of education and development. The knowledge gained from the training can be applied directly in daily practice and shared with colleagues and other professionals. Furthermore, on-the-job training is organized within three participating organizations. During this practical training phase, the professionals put what they have learned into practice and provide training to the target group themselves. During the opening ceremony, Deputy Silberie emphasized the importance of the professionals’ role: “You can make a difference by looking not only at what a person cannot do, but precisely at what a person can do and what possibilities still exist.” EPB thanks Stichting Lezen en Schrijven and all participating organizations and professionals for their effort and collaboration.
