With the high temperatures we are experiencing these days in Aruba, it is essential to pay special attention to our senior citizens. As the years pass, the body changes: the sensation of thirst decreases, and the body’s ability to regulate its own temperature drops. This puts our elderly at a higher risk of dehydration without them even realizing it.
Taking care of our elderly during this hot season does not have to be complicated. With a little attention and good habits, we can ensure they stay cool, healthy, and full of energy.
Here are 4 practical and effective tips:
Have them drink water constantly (without waiting for thirst): Since the sensation of thirst decreases with age, it is important to drink a few sips of water continuously throughout the day, instead of waiting until the body asks for it.
*Incorporate water-rich foods: The daily menu can include soup, cucumber salad, and soft fruits like watermelon, melon, and papaya. These are easy to eat and provide a hydration bonus!
*Seek the coolest hours to go out (with them): Avoid walks, yard work, or being out in the sun between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. When going out, wear light-colored cotton clothing and use sunscreen.
*Create a cool environment at home: Keep windows open where the breeze flows, use a fan or air conditioning, and ensure the resting area is well ventilated and in the shade.
Proper hydration prevents headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and other health complications. Let’s take care of our seniors with a good glass of fresh water every day!
