Seeing as intense heat will continue to occur, AHATA’s Environment Committee has prepared practical material to help employers and employees ensure protection. AHATA has shared the educational material with its members with the goal of helping companies strengthen their measures to protect workers against heat. Additionally, the material includes tips for employees to take care of themselves and recognize warning symptoms.
Among other things, employers are asked to take the hottest hours into account when scheduling work and to always have water available and accessible. It is important to have a shady or cool place where workers can take short breaks or alternate their tasks. This prevents them from staying out in the sun for too long during the hottest hours.
Workers also have a responsibility to look after themselves and those around them. Pay attention to one another, especially children and the elderly. Heat can affect each person differently.
Indicators that heat is affecting a person include: dizziness, nausea, lack of strength, unusual tiredness, and muscle cramps. If a person presents one or more of these symptoms, stop the activity, take them to a cool place, and do not leave them alone. Seek help immediately if symptoms are serious or do not improve.
