Adopting or buying a pet is a decision that brings joy, but also a responsibility that lasts throughout the animal’s entire life. A dog is not a temporary gift or something that can be left behind when circumstances change.
The dog law, the Hondenverordening, uses the word ‘houder’ (keeper/holder). This does not refer solely to the official owner, but also to the person who has the dog under their care. From the moment you agree to care for a dog, you bear responsibility for its welfare and behavior.
Before getting a pet, everyone must evaluate whether they have enough time, space, and resources for food, veterinary care, hygiene, supervision, and attention. One must also think about what will happen during travel, moving houses, illness, or changes in financial situation.
Many animals end up on the street because they were taken in without considering the full commitment. Preventing abandonment starts with a conscious decision. If you are not prepared for the responsibility, the most responsible decision is to wait.
The government, through the Dog Control Center (Centro di Control di Cacho) and in the future the Animal Rescue and Control Center, as well as many foundations in Aruba, help animals in need, but this cannot replace the responsibility of the owner themselves. Every pet that remains protected and cared for is one less animal that might end up on the street.
