NWO launches new awards for impact, open science, and “team science”

Nwo Ta Lansa Award Nobo Pa Impacto Ciencia Habri Y Team Science

Nominate researchers from the Caribbean region now!

Science has a large number of renowned awards: from the Nobel Prize to the Spinoza and Stevin prizes that NWO itself presents every year. They reward innovative researchers and take their work a step further. However, for some themes—and the researchers dedicated to them—a stage is still missing. The Dutch Research Council (NWO) is filling this gap with the new NWO Awards. (www.nwo.nl/en/nwo-awards)

Researchers in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten can also be nominated. Through these awards, NWO wants to make the full dimension of research funded by the Netherlands visible, including work carried out in and for the Caribbean region.

Four awards, four themes NWO is creating four awards that strengthen science:

Arete Award: Healthy research culture.

Atlas Award: Social impact.

Agora Award: Collaboration (team science).

UKB Leo Waaijers Open Science Award: Open science (deadline has passed).

These awards put individuals and teams who are truly making a difference in the spotlight—from scientific culture to the relationship between research and society.

What can you nominate? Nominate an initiative that broadens the impact of research. Both individuals and teams are eligible—NWO deliberately directs these awards toward research groups, as many exceptional achievements are realized together.

Who can nominate? Anyone can nominate. Researchers can put forward themselves or colleagues. This also applies to support staff, social partners, and people outside of science. Do you know an initiative that deserves recognition? Submit it.

“Science has initiatives that we rarely put in the spotlight,” says Marcel Levi, President of the NWO Executive Board. “With the NWO Awards, we want to change that. We distinguish the people and teams that make science more open, more collaborative, and socially more relevant—and we invite everyone, everywhere in the Kingdom, to submit exceptional initiatives.”

Nominate before September 10, 2026, via the NWO Awards nomination form: www.nwo.nl/en/nwo-awards.
