Caya Grandi: From an old shopping center to a living and vibrant heart

Caya Grandi Di Un Centro Comercial Bieu Pa Un Curason Biba Y Vibrante

The vision for our city center, Caya Grandi, is in full evolution. More than just a shopping zone, the goal is to transform the heart of our capital into a living, safe, and multifunctional urban space, where living, working, and recreation unite in a new dynamism.
The decline of Caya Grandi is no secret, but the solutions on the table are much deeper than just a “facelift” for the buildings. The current vision does not seek to compete with the high-rise zone, but to create its own identity: an “in-between” city center with an authentic and human character.

Living in Caya: A paradigm shift One of the pillars of this transformation is the conversion of existing buildings into apartments. The idea is to offer housing opportunities for students, young entrepreneurs, and professionals working in the center.

“We want a street that has people at night,” is the common sentiment among those leading this vision. When people live in Caya Grandi, the dynamics change. It will no longer be a place that closes its doors when office hours end, but a neighborhood where you find cafes, music, and an atmosphere where people can sit and enjoy our climate, grab a bite to eat, and feel safe.

For this vision to become reality, the financing structure needs a solid foundation. Elton Croes, who is at the forefront of these efforts, emphasized that success lies in collaboration, according to Mardjori Vermeer. The proposal is to create a fund where all merchants contribute a fee based on their commercial space, along with contributions from banks and government support.

The main objective of this fund is the maintenance of the area: keeping it clean, safe, and attractive. Additionally, there are concrete plans to integrate organizations that work with homeless people and against addiction, ensuring that the transformation of Caya Grandi is socially responsible and inclusive.

The “shopping” paradigm must also evolve. Today’s tourist doesn’t come just to shop; they seek an experience. “Shopping is a form of entertainment,” indicates Mardjori Vermeer. Just like going to the beach, visiting Caya Grandi should be an activity where you take your time to enjoy the atmosphere, the culinary offerings, and the local culture.

The effort is in a critical phase. Although there are plans on the table and willingness from the parties, realization requires immediate action. The merchants are ready to make their contribution, but the message is clear: “If you open your shop, you become part of the street, and you also carry the responsibility.”

The vision for Caya Grandi is that of a heart beating again. Not to return to what it was yesterday, but to create a renewed Caya Grandi, where commercial value is sustained by vibrant urban life. The question is not whether it can be done, but how quickly all stakeholders—government, banks, and the private sector—can sit at the table to execute the plan that will determine the future of our city.
