Eduard Pieters regrets that only five minutes were allocated for a matter of great national importance

The Parliament of Aruba convened a public meeting with representatives of labor unions, where a total of 13 unions gathered at the House of the People (Cas di Pueblo) to express their concerns regarding the Rijkswet HOFA and its possible impact on the country.

During the meeting, unions shared their viewpoints and concerns related to financial supervision and Aruba’s self-determination. The gathering formed part of the ongoing dialogue between the labor sector and political authorities regarding the proposed legislation.

However, leader of the PPA faction, Eduard Pieters, expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the meeting was handled, particularly regarding the time allocated for parliamentarians to ask questions. According to Pieters, the decision to limit the question period to only five minutes was not proportional to the importance of the issue under discussion, but rather resembled an act of censorship—silencing the people.

He indicated that a meeting with such serious implications for Aruba’s financial and institutional future should provide sufficient opportunity for in-depth debate and clarification of important points. According to the political leader, a transparent and participatory process is essential to maintain trust in democratic institutions.

Pieters’ remarks reflect a broader concern within Parliament about the need for more time and space for discussion on matters that have a direct impact on governance, autonomy, and the country’s stability. On several occasions, questions have already been raised about the role of the President of Parliament, suggesting that the function has not always been transparent or democratic, but has instead shown signs of censorship and authoritarian tendencies within Parliament
