Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Luc Mercelina officially inaugurated a new emergency generator at the Department of Communication (DCOMM), strengthening the country’s emergency communications capacity ahead of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
The generator will ensure uninterrupted operation of Government’s communication systems, including national radio station SXMGOV 107.9 FM, during power outages and disasters. The investment forms part of Government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public information services during critical events.
Addressing attendees, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of preparedness, noting that communication remains a lifeline in times of crisis. He emphasized that all essential systems must be fully operational before hurricane season begins, rather than tested during an emergency.
With the installation, DCOMM will be able to sustain critical communication functions, supporting coordinated emergency response efforts and delivering timely updates to residents.
DCOMM Department Head Maurice Lake described the generator as a proactive investment in public safety and national readiness. He highlighted its role in reinforcing disaster management efforts and ensuring reliable access to verified information before, during, and after emergencies.
Also present at the ceremony were Fire Chief and National Disaster Coordinator Clive Richardson, Head of Facilities Management Ekema Henderikus, representatives from Electec, DCOMM staff, and invited guests.
