Last week, two important steps were taken toward executing the downtown reconstruction work in Playa (centrumgebied). This concerns the Kaya Grandi and surrounding area project. First, the agreement with the contractor was signed. Subsequently, on Friday, August 14, an information session was held with residents and business owners established within the project area. During this meeting, the upcoming works, the general planning and phased rollout, and what this means for the neighborhood were explained. Work has begun this week.
The total duration of the project is expected to be seven months. The work includes improving rainwater drainage and better structuring public spaces, ensuring that various functions in the city center receive the necessary space. This will create a coherent and functional layout for our city center.
In conversation with residents and business owners During the information session, residents and entrepreneurs had the opportunity to ask questions, share their concerns, and raise key points of attention. This input helps synchronize the execution as smoothly as possible with the daily use of the area.
The deputy head of the Directorate of Planning and Development, Ligwino Leito, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration: “By signing the agreement, we are taking an important step toward execution. We know that work in the city center impacts residents, business owners, and visitors. Therefore, we find it important to provide clear information, listen closely to the community around us, and stay in touch with the neighborhood throughout the execution. In this way, we work together to achieve a city center that is more attractive, more accessible, and better structured for the future.”
Accessibility during the works During the execution, all buildings will remain accessible on foot. For pedestrians, safe and clearly marked walking routes are being created. Additionally, the project area will remain accessible to emergency services.
Where road closures or temporary detours are necessary, we will communicate this in advance. Throughout the execution, the Public Entity Bonaire will continue to provide updates regarding progress, the various phases, and any changes in accessibility.
With the start of the works, we are taking another concrete step toward further improving public space in downtown Playa.
