We commemorate the 249th anniversary of an event that indelibly placed our island, affectionately known as the “Golden Rock,” onto the world stage: The First Salute.
On November 16, 1776, Fort Oranje fired eleven guns in response to a salute from the American brig, Andrew Doria. In that moment, Sint Eustatius became the very first foreign territory to formally recognize the flag of the newly independent United States. This single act of diplomatic courage is a cornerstone of our heritage and a testament to our island’s pivotal role in global history.
