Awareness and Lifestyle: October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer De Mama

The month of October is dedicated globally and locally to breast cancer awareness. Although our physical health deserves attention throughout the entire year, this month gives us an opportunity to pause, reflect, and take concrete action for our well-being and that of our loved ones.

Globally, cancer cases show a concerning increase, and the age of patients is dropping. Aruba is not exempt from this reality. For this reason, it is of vital importance that our community becomes more aware of prevention and early detection. In this context, it is worth mentioning the outstanding work being done by Stichting ABO, along with the foundations under its umbrella, including Fundacion BOB. These organizations play a crucial role in raising awareness and facilitating breast screenings for both women and men. It is important to remember that while breast cancer occurs more frequently in women, men can also be affected.

A person’s health starts with themselves. In line with this, various studies and data from the Department of Public Health (DVG) highlight the close relationship between our lifestyle and the risk of developing serious illnesses like cancer.

According to the STEPS study conducted by DVG in 2023, the figures for Aruba are alarming:

  • 78% of our community suffers from overweight or obesity.
  • 49% of the population is classified in the obesity category.

Scientific studies indicate that a large portion of cancers in Aruba are linked to obesity and high sugar consumption. Cancerous cells exist in every person’s body, but what triggers or activates them is excessive sugar intake. Higher consumption of sugar and sugary drinks leads to a higher risk of weight gain and the development of cancer.

To make a positive change in our lifestyle, we must focus on four pillars of prevention:

  • Healthy Eating: Due to busy lives, with many citizens working two or three jobs, opting for fast food has become a habit because it is convenient. An effort must be made to reduce the consumption of processed foods and cut back on sugar, salt, and fat.
  • Proper Hydration: In Aruba, the population heavily favors sweet beverages, such as soft drinks, sodas, and high-sugar juices. It is essential to replace these drinks with sugar-free water. General medical advice recommends drinking at least 7 glasses of water per day.
  • Daily Physical Activity: Movement is essential for the body. Scientists recommend half an hour (30 minutes) of exercise per day. A gym membership is not necessary: you can walk around your yard, in your neighborhood, at Linear Park, or in any public space.
  • Sufficient Daily Rest: One aspect that is often neglected is sleep. Scientific studies confirm that an adult needs between 7 and 8 hours of sleep per day. During sleep, the body restores itself and generates new cells. Getting enough sleep helps the body regenerate and positively impacts mood and the immune system.

During this awareness month, Member of Parliament Gino Goeloe calls upon the entire community of Aruba to take necessary steps to care for their personal health and to show unconditional support to those battling this disease.

Almost every citizen has a family member or loved one who is suffering or has suffered from cancer. Let us embrace them, love them, and care for them. The FUTURO faction expresses deep gratitude and support to all health professionals and caregivers who provide loving and dedicated care to patients every day.

“Health starts with you: eat healthy, move for 30 minutes a day, drink enough water, and get the sleep you need.”
