On behalf of James Finies, Founder of the Bonaire Human Rights Organization (BHRO), we are proud to announce the great success of the human rights workshop “Nos Tambe Tin Derecho” (We Also Have Rights), which took place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the Bonaire Public Library.
The workshop reached full capacity, bringing together participants of different nationalities, origins, and cultures who form part of Bonaire’s diverse community. The high turnout is a positive reflection of the growing interest within the Bonaire community to learn about their fundamental human rights and how these rights apply in daily life.
For BHRO, the message was clear: people want to know their rights. Participants received an introduction to the fundamental principles of human rights and educational materials designed to help them better understand their own rights and the rights of others. The diversity of the attendees was particularly encouraging and demonstrated that human rights education is relevant to everyone, regardless of nationality, origin, language, age, or background.
BHRO has set a goal to train 3,000 people in Bonaire on human rights over the next three years. This will take place through workshops, human rights movie nights, community information sessions, educational activities, and public awareness initiatives across the island.
BHRO President, Davika Bissessar Shaw, stated:
“Our goal is clear: to train 3,000 people in Bonaire over the next 3 years through human rights workshops, movie nights, community information sessions, and other educational activities. We want human rights education to reach every part of our community. People need to know their rights, understand the rights of others, and feel empowered to stand firm for human dignity.”
BHRO extends its sincere gratitude to the management and staff of the Bonaire Public Library for their support and for providing a pleasant and accessible space for the workshop. We greatly appreciate and value our strong working relationship.
BHRO would also like to express its sincere appreciation to United for Human Rights for their ongoing support, educational resources, and commitment to promoting human rights education. Their backing is a vital part of our efforts to bring human rights knowledge directly to the people of Bonaire.
