On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the school project “Choices Matter, So Do You” will be officially launched at the University of Aruba.
This innovative educational program was developed at the initiative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM) in collaboration with the University of Aruba (UA) and Diversion, a Dutch organization specialized in creating educational programs on social and civic topics.
In the Netherlands, the program has been running successfully for more than ten years under the name “Wie grijpt in?” (“Who steps in?”).
The initiative offers Ciclo Basico students from various secondary schools the opportunity to engage in dialogue about current social issues, guided by peer educators from the University of Aruba, in close cooperation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Launch Event
The festive launch will take place on Tuesday, November 4, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, in the MC Chapel of the University of Aruba.
During the event, the Attorney General of the Public Prosecutor’s Office will speak about the importance of this project for the OM.
While the OM’s focus traditionally lies on criminal prosecution, this project emphasizes prevention and youth engagement through education and awareness.
On behalf of the University of Aruba, Ruth Bonnevalle, project coordinator and senior lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, will explain the key role students play as peer educators within the program.
School leaders and teachers from thirteen secondary schools have been invited to attend the launch.
During the ceremony, the peer educators will be introduced, and the project’s logo and slogan will be officially unveiled.
Empowering Young People Through Dialogue
“With Choices Matter, So Do You, we give young people the opportunity to interactively explore the rule of law, the concept of justice, and their own role — both personally and within society,” said project manager Juliette van Romondt.
“Every parent and teacher can see that young people are constantly being influenced — by social media, by peer pressure. We aim to strengthen their resilience, encourage them to reflect on their choices and consequences, and foster a sense of civic engagement.”
Implementation in Aruban Schools
The program will be introduced in Aruban secondary schools starting November 2025, and will continue for at least the next two school years.
In preparation, information sessions have been held with schools to ensure that the teaching materials connect effectively with the experiences and social reality of Aruban students.
The program will be available in Papiamento, Dutch, and English.
Following the official program, a reception will provide an opportunity for members of the press and invited guests to speak with press officer Zamira Paesch, the project manager, and lecturers from the University of Aruba.
