After discussions with various advisors and economic experts, Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and the Primary Sector Geoffrey Wever has confirmed that the Government of Aruba will move forward with plans to permanently dismantle the former oil refinery in San Nicolas, a step that marks the end of Aruba’s oil refining era.
Minister Wever stated that the decision to dismantle and repurpose the land was made after a deep analysis of global and regional developments related to energy, sustainability and the circular economy. According to the government, the proposal is to transform the area toward sustainability, innovation and more diversified economic opportunities.
“Although there has been access by parliamentary members and appeals for alternative uses of the land, after evaluation and consultation we have decided to definitively end the refinery’s operations and look at the most appropriate way to develop the area for the benefit of the Aruban people,” Minister Wever said.
Discussion around investments related to Venezuela
Minister Wever also indicated that his ministry has been in contact with several international companies that may be interested in investing, including those involved in infrastructure and energy movements related to Venezuela, which could influence options for Aruba. He did not provide a final confirmation but emphasized that the government is “open to evaluating opportunities that can bring economic benefit without compromise.”
According to Minister Wever, the strategy to attract investment to Aruba includes dialogue with stakeholders from different sectors and analysis of how to integrate sustainable development into the planning for the former refinery land.
Community uncertainty and expectations
The announcement about the dismantling has created expectations and questions within the community. Meanwhile, the Government of Aruba stresses the need to protect the environment during the process of remediation and repurposing of the area, integrating technical expertise and responsible investment.
