As part of the celebrations for Fire Prevention Week and Firefighters’ Day, female representation within the fire department took center stage. Analisa Maria, one of the few female firefighters in Aruba, shared her experience, challenges, and pride in being part of a profession historically dominated by men.

Breaking Gender Stereotypes

Maria emphasized that her decision to join the Aruba Fire Department (Brandweer Aruba) was driven by the desire to prove that capability and dedication are not determined by gender. Her testimony highlights that physical and operational challenges are faced equally by all team members, without distinction.

“My decision came from wanting to show that a woman can do it too. You shouldn’t be afraid of being a woman to achieve something in life. Although this profession in Aruba is known for being male-dominated, I am in the truck with them, I fight fires with them, and I assist in accidents. Whatever they do, I do too,” Maria expressed with pride.

In her statements, Maria highlighted the constant support she receives from her male colleagues in the department, which facilitated her integration and strengthened teamwork. For Maria, having worked hard to reach where she is today brings deep personal satisfaction and a sense of professional achievement.

Answering questions from the press for young women and girls who view the firefighting profession with interest but may feel hesitation or fear, Maria delivered a direct and inspiring message:

“Don’t be afraid! If you want to try and you truly want it, go for it. The work is beautiful, but it is serious work. You will encounter moments that are not pleasant, but that is why you train and prepare yourself mentally and physically.”

Maria’s story not only underscores progress in gender inclusion within Aruba’s emergency services, but also serves as an inspiring example for future generations of women aiming to break ground in non-traditional fields.
