Caribbean Islands Can Remain Calm: Netherlands on Standby to Provide Support, Though the Form of Assistance Remains Unclear

Although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense have reaffirmed that the Netherlands is willing to assist Aruba if an eventual situation arises, the exact form of that assistance — whether it will be direct support or help with conditions — has not been clearly defined. According to both ministries, the Netherlands will step in if the security of the Caribbean islands requires it, but concrete details regarding the type of aid are lacking.

This lack of definition raises questions, especially in light of the experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the aid Aruba received ultimately came in the form of loans with conditions. According to PPA faction leader Eduard Pieters, while the Kingdom Charter states that member countries must assist each other in times of need, the Netherlands has not explicitly clarified how these principles would apply in any potential future support.

Pieters added that, although the crucial question of how assistance would be structured remains unanswered, there is no reason for panic. Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are not under any current threat, nor are they involved in the tensions between Venezuela and the United States. According to the information presented in the House of Representatives, the regional situation is stable, and the Caribbean islands can remain calm.
