Parliamentarian Eduard Pieters (PPA): “A historic opportunity lost to stop the introduction of the HOFA law during the Royal visit”

Eduard Pieters

After deep reflection, I paid close attention to the speech delivered by Prime Minister Mike Eman to His Majesty King Willem-Alexander on March 18.

“Although the historical narrative was nicely presented, we as the PPA faction regret that the Prime Minister missed a golden opportunity to highlight the actions of our predecessors and structurally defend Aruba’s autonomy,” Pieters stated.

During his ceremonial speech, Prime Minister Eman shared a personal and powerful anecdote about the time the Aruban delegation visited the Netherlands in 1948. At that time, authorities in The Hague had advised against receiving the delegation. However, Queen Wilhelmina decided personally to receive them on March 18, 1948, accepting a petition with 2,147 signatures requesting the right to self-determination (Status Aparte). This date became a historic moment when the people of Aruba expressed their love for freedom.

An incomplete historical parallel

“For the PPA faction, this was exactly the moment the Prime Minister should have acted. If he acknowledges the great struggle of his grandfather to deliver a petition personally in the hands of our current King’s great-grandmother, how is it possible that he did not recognize the impact he could create today?” Pieters questioned.

“Imagine the significance if, on the historic date of March 18, 2026, the grandson of Shon Henny Eman had delivered a similar petition to King Willem-Alexander?” Pieters reflected.

Defending our Status Aparte against HOFA

As Aruba celebrates 50 years of our national anthem and flag and 40 years of Status Aparte, the PPA faction considers this a “missed opportunity.” The scenario was perfect: the King sharing the same podium with the Prime Minister.

The PPA faction emphasizes that this was the ideal moment for Mike Eman, on behalf of all Aruban organizations, to present a petition asking for the HOFA law to be revoked. This would have been the only way to guarantee and protect the hard-earned Status Aparte.

Action instead of words

There must be coherence between the history we recount and the actions we take today. We cannot just remember past heroism without applying the same courage to present challenges.

“The King was right there, closer than ever. It is regrettable that a beautiful speech was chosen instead of action for the future of our autonomy,” Pieters concluded
