Mp Eduard Pieters (PPA): “a strong kingdom must start with a strong democracy”

Un Reino Fuerte

A group of experts presented a deep analysis of the relationship between the four countries of the Dutch Kingdom.

During the IPKO (Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultations) meetings in the Netherlands, one of the moments that attracted the most attention was the presentation by an independent group of experts, who dedicated their work to analyzing the state of democracy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. According to Member of Parliament Eduard Pieters of the PPA faction, the presentation was not a political speech, but a serious and profound analysis based on literature research and studies conducted by a committee made up of an expert appointed by each Parliament of each country that forms the Kingdom. The analysis is based on various literatures concerning the functioning within the current structure of the Kingdom.

The central question: how healthy is our democracy in the Kingdom?
The expert group focused on four fundamental dimensions that determine how a democracy functions:

Representation: How the different peoples within the Kingdom feel their voices are truly represented and heard.

Influence: How the countries have a real possibility to influence decisions that affect their future.

Oversight and accountability: The capacity of Parliament to control power and demand responsibility for decisions made within the Kingdom.

Institutional capacity: The means, knowledge, and capacity that the different countries have to execute their democratic duties effectively.

A balance that must be strengthened
According to Pieters, the study placed emphasis on a crucial point: democracy within the Kingdom is not just a matter of having institutions, but also of maintaining a healthy balance between the different powers and between the different countries that form part of the Kingdom.

“You cannot speak of a modern and democratic Kingdom if there is no equitable balance between representation, influence, oversight, and capacity,” Pieters indicated.

Precisely for this reason, the expert group drew attention to what they consider challenges and areas for improvement in the institutional relationship between the four countries.

Democracy is not something that can be taken for granted
For the PPA, the value of this study is that it forces the four countries to pause and reflect on how they can strengthen democracy within the Kingdom. Pieters expressed satisfaction that an independent group of experts, appointed by each parliament, took the initiative to analyze this matter in depth and present conclusions that can contribute to a more mature and constructive debate in the future.

“Democracy is not automatic. We must constantly care for, evaluate, and strengthen democracy,” he emphasized.

The next step
The expert group will continue to refine and develop their work over the coming months. According to Pieters, the expectation is that by the end of October there will be more information and concrete recommendations written in a report on how to strengthen the democratic system within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

For the PPA, the main message is clear: a strong Kingdom is not built solely on political agreements, but on strong, transparent democratic institutions that the people have trust in. Because ultimately, democracy in the Kingdom is measured not only through laws and structures, but in human relationships and the confidence citizens have that their voices truly count.
