Over the past six months, young people in Bonaire participated in the Digital Awareness Academy project. The project was designed for youth aged 12 to 17 and focused on the safe, conscious, and responsible use of social media and digital technology.
Through various lessons and interactive workshops, participants learned how to deal with online risks, cyberbullying, privacy, and healthy screen time. They also gained basic knowledge about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and learned how to view online information with a critical eye.
The project was executed by BITES BV, with support from a police officer and a psychologist. Through this collaboration, the youth not only acquired digital skills but also received attention regarding the mental impact of online behavior.
According to the Youth Policy Advisor, the project demonstrates how vital digital resilience is for young people. By making them aware of online risks, they are working toward a safe digital environment and responsible citizenship in Bonaire. The advisor also highlighted the importance of social contributions from companies and organizations, noting that this collective commitment is necessary to protect our youth against the social challenges they face today.
The organization looks back on the project with satisfaction and hopes that the youth will continue to use the knowledge they acquired and share it within their circles.
