The Public Entity Bonaire (EPB) is calling for attention to people living with dementia and their loved ones. In Bonaire, the focus is on the person, not the disease. A person with dementia has their own life story, wishes, and capabilities.
The Public Entity Bonaire is also contributing its part and working on a island-wide dementia policy for our island, in synchronization with the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), and Care and Youth Dutch Caribbean (ZJCN). Various organizations from the care and welfare sectors, including the Alzheimer Bonaire Foundation and Stichting Mantelzorg Bonaire, are involved in this effort.
The goal is to ensure that people with dementia receive appropriate guidance, treatment, and care, enabling them to participate in our community for as long as possible. Self-determination and quality of life are crucial starting points in this approach. Their loved ones are actively involved on an equal footing.
The Public Entity Bonaire also supports concrete initiatives. An example of this is EPB’s subsidization of the Alzheimer Bonaire Foundation (FAB) for, among other things, an information and consultation hour regarding dementia. This year FAB celebrates its 15th anniversary, having dedicated all those years to increasing awareness, knowledge, and information about dementia, as well as providing support for people with dementia and their loved ones. Today, on World Alzheimer’s Day, FAB’s board handed over the World Alzheimer Report 2026 to Commissioner Silberie, a tradition the foundation carries out annually.
Additionally, the Public Entity Bonaire is involved in developing the Dementia Care and Life Journey. Shortly, this Care and Life Journey will be available via the EPB website.
A community where people with dementia can continue to participate requires everyone’s understanding and attention. By recognizing dementia and speaking openly about it, we can contribute to an environment where people with dementia and their loved ones feel supported.
