On Sunday afternoon near Grapefield, several tour guides witnessed a fatal accident involving a UTV that did not carry a legal “V” commercial license plate. Representatives of United Tour Operators (Tour Operators Uni) express their deep regret over this tragic incident, which claimed the life of a young Dutch national. Coming just weeks into discussions regarding the importance of regulating and properly inspecting these vehicles, the severe consequences of lacking oversight have become painfully clear.
According to available information, the accident was not associated with an organized tour; an organized excursion always includes a licensed guide leading the group, registered vehicles, and adherence to designated routes. Furthermore, colleagues at the scene indicated that the UTV driver was attempting risky maneuvers prior to the crash. “High speeds, drifting, or doing ‘donuts’ in any vehicle—especially a UTV—are actions we strongly condemn, and for this very reason, we urgently demand stricter enforcement within our sector,” representatives of United Tour Operators stated.
The issue of unauthorized or “pirate” UTVs and ATVs operating illegally along the north coast with personal “A” license plates is an ongoing concern that operators have repeatedly brought to light. According to United Tour Operators, current dialogue is crucial to preventing such accidents, but they emphasize that alongside discussions, the sector urgently needs concrete action from all relevant stakeholders.
