In an effort to improve the quality of life and health of our population, the Department of Public Health (DVG) together with Youth Health Care (JZS) are ready to implement new plans focused on primary prevention and the fight against obesity. This policy comes as a response to growing concerns over the impact of obesity on the health of citizens in Aruba. According to Minister of Health Mervin Wyatt-Ras, a series of preventive measures has been initiated with the central objective of educating and guiding the community toward a healthier direction.
Moratorium on Fast Food Permits
One of the most impactful decisions in this plan is the approval of a moratorium on new permits for fast-food restaurants. Minister Mervin Wyatt-Ras has given the green light to halt the issuance of these permits for a period of time, with the goal of curbing easy access to unhealthy food and thus sending a clear signal that Aruba is serious in its fight against this disease.
Guidance and Prevention Programs
Beyond legal restrictions, the plan also includes an educational part and direct support:
- Lifestyle Promotion: Special programs will be launched to educate the community on how to maintain an active and balanced lifestyle.
- Nutrition and Healthy Eating: Professional guidance on nutrition will be offered to help individuals lose weight in a safe and sustainable way.
- Preparation for Surgery: For individuals who require surgery, there will be special diets and preventive programs to properly prepare their bodies.
For these projects to be successful, there is close collaboration with the General Health Insurance (AZV). Because AZV is in a positive financial position with a surplus, there is the necessary space to invest more in the prevention package. This is crucial to ensure that all citizens have access to the quality care they deserve when they fall ill, but especially to prevent them from becoming ill in the first place.
Currently, experts are evaluating current laws to see what other legal advice and legal paths can be taken to fortify this public health management. With these steps, Aruba is moving toward a future where health and well-being are the top priority
