A measles infection has been confirmed in a foreign person upon arrival in Bonaire. This person contracted the infection outside Bonaire and arrived on the island on February 1 by cargo ship from Aruba. The person was immediately admitted to the hospital. GGD Bonaire and Fundashon Mariadal have taken measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
What is measles?
Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It often begins with fever, general malaise, cold-like symptoms, red eyes, and coughing. After 3 to 7 days, red spots appear on the skin, usually starting behind the ears and then spreading over the entire body.
You can get measles if you have never had the disease before and have not been vaccinated against it. Children are usually vaccinated against measles through a consultation office, which is why measles cases are very rare on Bonaire.
What is GGD doing?
GGD is conducting a contact investigation to identify people who may have been in contact with the patient. People at higher risk are receiving personal advice. If necessary, they will be offered preventive treatment (PEP). GGD is working closely with Fundashon Mariadal in this process.
What does this mean for residents?
The number of people at increased risk is currently limited. GGD has identified those who had close contact with the patient and is monitoring their health situation. Residents who did not have direct contact with the patient do not need to take any action at this time
