The Legacy of Dr. Joel Rajnherc

Jyabert Dijkhoff 960X720 1

There comes a time in life when all it asks for is something simple yet profound: respect. The passing of Dr. Joel Rajnherc is not only the loss of a respected and esteemed doctor—it is the loss of a leader who left a deep mark on the way our island thinks about healthcare.

For many people in Aruba, the Instituto Medico San Nicolas (ImSan) is more than just a medical institution. It is a symbol of hope, innovation, and human care. Over the years, this symbol was shaped under the leadership of Dr. Rajnherc.

That is why I am saddened to see that, on the very day his passing was announced, there was already speculation in some media about potential replacements. Even in tabloids, which often act as microphones for political power, two people without medical qualifications or experience in healthcare began discussing appointments before the public had time to process the loss. This is precisely a moment that calls for wisdom. A pause, a moment of reflection, a moment of respect was appropriate. People, forgive them, because many times people do not understand the weight of their words.

A Legacy That Cannot Be Ignored
To give due respect, it is good to pause and reflect on Dr. Rajnherc’s indisputable legacy. Under his leadership, ImSan became an institution recognized both locally and internationally. Among his most important achievements are:

  • Accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI)
  • Development of a high-level oncology center
  • International recognition for quality of care
  • And most importantly: the trust of our people

But perhaps his greatest achievement was not infrastructure or technology. It was investing in people. Any serious organization knows that its most valuable resource is not buildings or equipment—it is the professionals who work every day for the wellbeing of patients. In this area, Dr. Rajnherc demonstrated something rarely seen: the ability to inspire, guide, and unite people around a common vision. Achievements like these do not happen automatically—they are the result of true leadership.

The Next Step
What now? Eventually, ImSan will have a new director. But if Aruba is serious about protecting the legacy that has been built, this decision must be made with wisdom, transparency, and responsibility.

A leader for a modern medical institution must have more than just technical competence. They must have:

  • Institutional leadership experience
  • A clear record of successfully completed projects
  • And above all, a proven ability to lead people

Because, in the end, a hospital is not just a building—it is a community of professionals dedicated to human care.

This decision will clearly show whether our institutions have matured enough to prioritize patient care—or whether key positions continue to be treated as political rewards.

A Call for Institutional Maturity
Aruba has reached a moment in its institutional development where the public expects more: transparency and maturity in public decisions.

Appointments that have a major impact on national healthcare should not be perceived as the result of political calculation but as the result of a serious, transparent process based on merit. What is their track record? A director who has never led a team successfully is unlikely to meet the huge responsibilities the position demands. And we must not forget: given the extraordinary legacy built at ImSan, the standard of leadership is set very high.

The opposite is also true. History shows that when an important position becomes a political reward, the institution—and eventually the people—often pay a very high price. In healthcare, that price can cost lives.

And when it comes to healthcare, it is natural that the voices of patients must also be heard. Patient organizations, representing direct experience with medical care, can offer valuable perspective in the reflection process on appointments and institutional leadership.

A Legacy That Deserves Protection
Dr. Joel Rajnherc did not just build an institution—he built a culture of human-centered quality care. This legacy deserves respect. It deserves continuity. And it deserves decisions that honor the vision that made ImSan what it is today.

If we can do this, we not only honor the memory of an extraordinary doctor, but also ourselves as a people. Healthcare does not belong to any political party—it belongs to all of us as a community.

With the next leadership of ImSan, I hope that Dr. Joel Rajnherc’s legacy will continue to live—both in the institution he helped build and in the human care our people deserve.
