Like every year, the hottest season brings with it a beautiful tradition that has been taking place on our island for eight years now: the celebration of Shabeel Day. While many people might think it has to do purely with the dry and hot weather, Shabeel Day holds a deep religious and community significance that deserves to be shared.
What is Shabeel Day?
Shabeel Day is a day that originates from Sikhism, a religion just like Christianity, Islam, or Hinduism. On this specific day, the Sikh community commemorates the sacrifice of one of their gurus (a prophet). In the past, this guru was tortured back then in boiling water, giving his life to save the lives of others.
To honor this act of love and faithfulness, the tradition calls for demonstrating generosity to one’s neighbor. How is this done? By distributing cold refreshments and water to everyone on the street, completely free of charge, in order to alleviate the heat.
A family effort with a great impact
This beautiful initiative in Aruba comes from a single family living on our island. Although they sometimes receive a helping hand from volunteers, the project is fundamentally carried out by the family core:
“It is a ‘one-man show’ you could say… we are just one family. My spouse, myself, and my children,” the organizer shares.
This dedication is immense, as the family aims every year to distribute an enormous amount of drinks. They visit distribution points with several pallets to hand out more than 10,000 cold drinks, helping the people of Aruba catch a moment of coolness during these hot days.
Shabeel Day is not simply an event to beat the heat, but a beautiful example of faith, unity, and structural sharing with our community.
