The ‘Ketenaanpak Overgewicht’ (Chain Approach to Overweight) conference, organized by GGD Bonaire / Public Health, on Saturday, June 13, 2026, brought together experts, policymakers, and chain partners to discuss a joint approach to overweight and obesity among adults and children in Bonaire. During the gathering, knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration were central.
Overweight and obesity are complex issues that go beyond just diet and exercise. Overweight and obesity do not only affect people’s health, but they also influence well-being, social participation, and quality of life. Therefore, a comprehensive approach is necessary.
The conference focused on strengthening the chain approach in Bonaire. Furthermore, care, welfare, sports, and education organizations are working together to achieve a sustainable approach to overweight and obesity. The meeting attracted a diverse group of participants and speakers. Through various presentations and discussions, valuable knowledge was shared regarding the situation in Bonaire, experiences with the chain approach in the Netherlands, and the investments needed to further shape a successful local approach.
Participants emphasized that a lasting impact is only possible when healthcare professionals, government, and social organizations work together intensively.
In his opening remarks, Commissioner Timoteo Silberie also underlined the importance of a strong chain approach:
“Knowing each other, knowing how to reach one another, and taking joint responsibility is crucial for this approach to be successful.”
