The responsibility of governance and parliament is following the right path. In a critical statement, jurist and president of the SIKI Foundation, Jayburtt Dijkhoff, questions whether we respect ourselves as Arubans. He makes it known that the political function here in Aruba, at home—meaning Aruba’s own government and Parliament itself—must assume their responsibility. It is regrettable that Aruba’s parliament still sits idly by and has yet to demand that the government of Aruba address the LIM law in order to have a healthier governance structure.

The governor’s role and the management of money Dijkhoff points out that the governor is the representative of King Willem-Alexander from the Netherlands, and that his position is not a political function; his function is symbolic for the unity of the kingdom. He explains that it is only when there is a human rights violation, or something that drastically impacts the Netherlands, that the governor acts.

However, the political function is right here in Aruba, with our own government and parliament. Now, if neither the government nor the parliament does anything to resolve and finalize the distribution of portfolios, if parliament does not question why the portfolios are not yet distributed, why there is still no clarity and transparency about why, or who is being appointed as prime minister, whether they still have the confidence of parliament, and whether they still have the mandate of the people. What is happening with the money of the people of Aruba?

The question of money and BISA funds Dijkhoff points out that one does not know what is happening with the money; by the way, CAFT says there are several millions that the government of Aruba does not use or invest, even though there are many problems that need solving. The people of Aruba must awaken from their sleep. Although several people are afraid and indicate they want to leave politics, the reality is that we are all in politics because politics affects us individually every day.

Politics affects us every day; every foundation, every association, every place that requests a subsidy is influenced. It is extremely important, because while we think that every four years you as a citizen can use your vote, if we do not use our voice to question and not distrust, but to ask and be critical of why leaders make certain decisions, why such decisions are made, we can always make use of our right to question.
