The board of United Merchants of Aruba (Comerciantenan Uni Aruba – CUA), led by its president Frans Ponson, has issued an urgent advisory to all its members regarding the Government of Aruba’s plan to raise the Minimum Wage to the Subsistence Minimum (Bestaansminimum) level effective January 1, 2027.
Concerns Over Lack of Economic Impact Study
The CUA board expressed serious concern regarding this proposed increase. According to the organization, the Government has not yet conducted any economic impact study to evaluate the effects this decision will have on the local economy.
Among the key areas of concern highlighted by the organization are:
- Inflationary Effects: The risk that a wage increase could drive a widespread rise in the prices of goods and services.
- Regional Competitive Standing: The potential impact on Aruba’s economic competitiveness compared to other nations in the region.
- Impact on Small Businesses: The added financial strain this measure will place on local merchants and small enterprises.
Extraordinary Meeting for CUA Members
To exchange views, present concerns, and establish a unified and firm stance as an organization, the CUA board is calling all members to an extraordinary meeting:
- Date: Wednesday, October 7
- Time: 11:00 AM
- Location: IMAX Theater at Gloria Aruba Mall
Participation Guidelines
This meeting is strictly for CUA members. Due to the urgent nature of the matter and to facilitate logistical planning, the board requests that each participating company send a maximum of one (1) representative.
