Protest demands changes to traffic law following hit-and-run case

Caso Hit And Run 16

Last Saturday, a protest took place organized by a group of families and relatives of victims who lost a loved one as a result of hit-and-run accidents. The protest focused on the lack of severe punishment for those responsible for this type of crime under current traffic laws.

Among the families present were relatives of Edwin Willims, whose paresnts passed away following a serious hit-and-run accident. According to information, the accident was caused by a young driver who fled the scene, while driving at high speed on a road where such speed was not permitted and under the influence of alcohol.

The tragedy has raised significant concern within the community, as well as among the affected families, who feel that current legislation does not impose sufficiently strict penalties to prevent this kind of irresponsible behavior on the road.

In response, the group of families initiated a signature collection, resulting in a manifesto calling for concrete changes to the traffic law. The documents and collected signatures were submitted to the Parliament of Aruba with the aim of achieving legal adjustments to address hit-and-run cases more rigorously through legislation.

The families hope that their actions will lead to real change, in order to prevent similar tragedies from continuing to occur without strong consequences for those responsible. However, one issue that also stands out in the entire accident process is that at the time when the other child  woman experienced the accident and nearly lost their lives, she went to file a complaint, the Aruba Police Force (KPA) did not accept or did not want to accept the complaint. This situation raises serious uncertainty as to why an official report was not taken, despite the fact that their lives were in danger.
