The official handover of Zoutmanstraat 1 took place recently. Prime Minister Mr. Mike Eman, together with the Minister of Public Health, Social Affairs, Elderly Care and Addiction Management, Mervin Wyatt-Ras, received the fully restored historic building.

Prime Minister Eman expressed that it is wonderful to see that the Department of Elderly Affairs will now occupy the building, as it represents an important part of Aruba’s history. Fort Zoutman was one of the first administrative offices on the island and served as the location for Customs, Police, registration services, and even the Court and Parliament. As development and modernization continued, the structure at Zoutmanstraat 1 was constructed, and most administrative offices were transferred there.

It is now the turn of the Department of Elderly Affairs to occupy this historic building. This also highlights the value placed on the department responsible for the care and well-being of Aruba’s senior citizens. The Monument Office supervised the restoration process from start to finish.

Prime Minister Eman expressed admiration and appreciation to everyone involved in the project, particularly those responsible for ensuring that the building retained its authentic shape and character.
