Last week, the Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) had the honor of receiving a visit from a pioneer in the medical world: Dr. Diego González Rivas. He is a surgeon specialized in thoracic and lung operations and was the first, in 2010, to develop a new technique called single-port VATS for complex surgeries: an advanced and less invasive surgical method that uses a very small incision. The hospital is very proud to have welcomed Dr. González and to have learned this technique during a lung surgery.
Surgeon Yuri Casseres, also a member of the HOH Board of Directors, expressed his honor in having operated together with Dr. Diego González Rivas, a surgeon who performs surgeries around the world. Aruba was the 140th country he visited to operate. He is currently working on a television series that will be shown on Netflix, making this visit even more special. And although the visit lasted only one day, it was still a very significant event for a small island like Aruba.
For more than a year, HOH had been preparing to make this surgery with the famous doctor possible, including bringing specialized instruments to Aruba that Dr. González Rivas uses during his procedures. Dr. González Rivas shared with the operating room staff the instruments he uses, as well as the method by which he performs major lung surgeries through a very small incision.
Dr. Diego González Rivas stated that everything went well and that he was pleased to have worked closely with the professionals at HOH.
“The operating room is one of the most modern I have ever seen. It has all the necessary technology, as well as well-trained nurses, OR assistants, and anesthesia staff. We performed surgery on a patient in which part of the lung was removed and excess fluid was extracted through a very small incision of only two (2) centimeters.”
Finally, Dr. González Rivas thanked the entire HOH team for the tremendous cooperation and for a successful surgery.
