700 books about masquerade distributed to primary schools in Bonaire

Author Giovanni Gijsbertha has distributed around 600 copies of his book E misterio di maskarada to all primary schools and educational institutions in Bonaire, over the past few days. Every student in groups 7 and 8 received a free book about the tradition of masquerade in Bonaire.

The distribution had a special significance because Gijsbertha was accompanied by Cliff Frans, who served as the inspiration for the book. Together, they visited every school to personally hand the books to the students.

Thanks to the collaboration of the Cultural Artistic Education project by Kalidat, which focuses on cultural education in Bonaire, the book has become a reality. It connects with the world of children’s experiences and exposes them to cultural heritage.

Masquerade is a unique and valuable tradition deeply rooted in Bonairean culture. It is an important part of the island’s identity. Through E misterio di maskarada, the tradition is passed on in an accessible and engaging way to the next generation. Through storytelling, it helps children understand and appreciate their own culture.

The distribution of the book in schools is a continuation of the official presentation on December 2 at the home of Chon Theodora, which is where masquerade traditionally concludes.

With this initiative, all students in groups 7 and 8 in Bonaire had the opportunity to discover and strengthen their own culture through literature.
