Maria Kelly donates her visual art to HOH

Recently, the Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) received a very special art collection. As soon as you step into the entrance area, you can now admire a highly unique visual art collection of butterflies crafted with mosaics. Local artist Maria Kelly decided to gift this artwork because she is moving, and felt there was no better place for it than the hospital. “An exhibition usually has a short duration, but here the work can remain permanently for everyone passing by to admire.” Artworks serve as a continuous source of inspiration and connection for everyone, including those visiting the hospital.

Art and Care
The mosaic collection is extremely colorful and visible even from the outside. “In this way, the artwork acts as a permanent exhibition that visitors, patients, employees, and everyone who passes by can appreciate daily. We are super happy and grateful that Maria thought of us,” says Jacco Vroegop of the Board of Directors. “We want to be a building where people feel at home. Not only do we provide quality care, but we also try to create tranquility and serenity. We don’t just treat patients; we also want to contribute to their mental well-being. Art creates connections and inspires. Everyone has their own taste, but I hope many people will appreciate this vibrant collection. This collection was worked on for many years and with a lot of patience. It is truly something special, looking at the details and dedication that went into this artwork.”

Inspiration
Maria Kelly shares that her inspiration to create the collection “The beautiful life of a butterfly” came from her love for nature and gardening. She adores the butterflies flying from flower to flower, as well as the birds and flowers that form part of the central theme. She further explains that she took mosaic classes in 2015, which is when her passion for this art form was born and began to grow. Maria decided to save up money to invest in materials so she could continue this hobby after her retirement. For this specific piece, she also used recycled materials. Additionally, she expresses her gratitude to her friend and former HOH employee, Virginia Tromp, who helped make this collection donation possible. HOH thanks Mrs. Kelly for this beautiful gesture and emphasizes that art brings value, connection, and a warm atmosphere to everyone, especially at the hospital.
