AVP Faction Leader Jennifer Arends-Reyes: “We start the new parliamentary year with enthusiasm and commitment to the people”

Lider De La Fraccion De Avp Jennifer Arends Reyes

Following the official opening of the new parliamentary year, AVP Faction Leader Jennifer Arends-Reyes reflected on the importance of this moment, marking it as an opportunity for all parliamentarians to renew their commitment to the country of Aruba.

Arends-Reyes made it known that, beyond the ceremony, the responsibility of parliamentary work remains fixed: the duty to oversee, ask critical questions, and maintain a constructive posture for the betterment of the country.

Analysis of the Governor’s Speech and Draft Bills
In the Governor’s speech, several projects and legislative initiatives were mentioned that need to be addressed in Parliament during the coming period. The Faction Leader emphasized that many of these initiatives focus on the social well-being of the community.

“Many of these laws and projects must reach the people directly. This makes us happy, and as a faction, we want to see them materialized. It is a challenge to process so many laws in Parliament, but many of them are social topics that have been debated for many years,” Arends-Reyes declared. In this context, the parliamentarian mentioned the need to support long-term care (langdurige zorg) and provide the necessary backing for youth and families expecting these solutions.

Priority in Tourism, Security, and Infrastructure
The AVP Faction Leader highlighted that during the new parliamentary year, attention will be given to key pillars of society:

• Tourism and Economic Distribution: Arends-Reyes pointed out that stakeholder meetings are taking place to recalibrate the tourism sector. The goal is to ensure that economic benefits reach closer to the community and that funds can be reallocated toward general well-being.
• Infrastructure and Investment Fund: She acknowledged the significant backlog in infrastructure maintenance due to the lack of investment in past years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Work is currently underway on the budget for the Investment Fund (IOF), which will soon be handled in Parliament to start directing resources toward necessary maintenance.
• Additional Priorities: Attention will remain focused on crucial areas and sectors such as education, security, nature, social aspects, and public health.

A Positive Vision for the Future
Arends-Reyes concluded that the AVP faction enters this parliamentary year with high motivation to execute their duties and drive forward projects that directly benefit the Aruban people.
