A life devoted to volunteerism
Maria Filomena “Mena” Tromp-Eckmeyer, born October 26, 1943, in Aruba, is a foundational figure in the community development movement in Noord. Her name is synonymous with culture, as she has dedicated her adult life to serving children, adults, and all members of the neighborhood. Her passion for community service began in the 1970s with the founding of Grupo Union Infantil, her first formal step into volunteer work, focused on creating activities for children in a safe environment to learn, socialize, and grow.

Service for all generations
Sra. Mena’s impact extended beyond youth. In 1988, she founded Grupo Flor di Bini Bini, a group dedicated to seniors (60+), offering social, recreational, and cultural activities. Her patience and kindness gave great strength to the group, bringing years of joy and community unity. Additionally, she founded the dance group Flor di Trinitaria, where she provided folkloric dance lessons for seniors, keeping traditions and folklore alive. The group participated in many cultural performances, proudly representing Noord.

Carnival, culture, and community

She also led her own group under Centro di Bario Noord and was an active member of the Parokia di Noord’s Social Assistance, dedicating her heart to both spiritual and social service.

Formal leadership roles
Her contributions went beyond volunteering:

· Board Member of Centro di Bario Noord: 2005–2015

· Board Member of Stichting Drecha Cas Aruba since 1998, a foundation supporting families with fewer resources in housing and welfare

Well-deserved recognition
