Under the leadership of Carlmichael Bikker, the Dakota Community Center (Centro di Bario Dakota) is currently executing several innovative projects aimed at fostering the intellectual and artistic development of the neighborhood’s youth. Key investments include the establishment of a high-tech computer center and the expansion of local music programs.
In a strategic move to bridge the digital divide, the center is in the final stages of installing a dedicated “Computer Room.” Coordinated by expert educator Glendrick Ridderstap, this facility will serve as a vital study hub, providing students who lack resources at home with high-speed internet access and the necessary technology to complete their academic assignments.
In addition to its technological advancements, Dakota is set to become a cultural cornerstone for music. Through a partnership with the Rufo Wever Music School, the center will offer formal music lessons. Furthermore, free steelpan classes will soon be available to local children, promoting accessible arts education.
Infrastructure upgrades are also a priority. The renovation of the Plaza Frans “Dudu” Adonis is nearing completion, and a new roof has been installed over the central patio. This improvement provides a shaded, climate-appropriate environment where youth can socialize and study outdoors throughout the day.
To fund these community initiatives, the board continues to organize grassroots events, such as the popular “Johnny Cake Night.” Individuals or organizations interested in providing financial support can find banking details on the “Centro di Bario y Deporte Dakota” Facebook page or contact the center directly at 561-9700 or 567-7134.
With these strategic investments, the Dakota Community Center reaffirms its commitment to cultivating discipline and talent within the next generation.
