Eight students from Statia departed the island on Saturday, 1 August 2026, to continue their education in the Netherlands.
The students recently completed their secondary education and will pursue programmes at universities, colleges and vocational education institutions.
Policy Advisor for Education Edris Bennett-Merkman joined the students and their families at F.D. Roosevelt Airport before their departure.
In the Netherlands, the students were welcomed by TuranGoeloe and provided with temporary hotel accommodation and guidance to assist them as they adjust to studying and living abroad.
Eligible residents pursuing further education may receive financial assistance under the Study Allowance Ordinance. The available support includes a monthly subsistence allowance of up to US$600, subject to the conditions established under the ordinance.
The support forms part of the education portfolio led by Island Commissioner Reuben Merkman, which focuses on improving access to continued education and ensuring that eligible students are informed about the financial assistance available to them.
Edris Bennett-Merkman, who is assigned to continued education, will remain in contact with students studying abroad and provide guidance where required.
The Government of Statia congratulates the students and wishes them success as they begin their studies in the Netherlands.
