Parliamentarian Dennerich Kelly: “We need a short-, medium- and long-term plan for the care of our elderly”

The AVP parliamentary faction recently held a meeting to discuss an issue of great importance: elderly care on the island. Parliamentarian Dennerich Kelly shared his views following the public session, emphasizing the seriousness the issue deserves and the AVP’s commitment to maintaining focus in this area.

According to Kelly, the presentation during the session — delivered by Minister Mervin Wyatt-Ras, along with the Department of Elderly Affairs and the Aruba Health Inspection — was “very engaging and informative” in explaining the government’s current approach.

The parliamentarian noted that “recently, several community partners have expressed concern about certain matters. This aligns with the reality we see every day.” Kelly mentioned that there are various working groups assisting in addressing the situation, and that the government is giving due attention to all parties involved.

In his remarks, Kelly emphasized that the crisis in elderly care is not just a local issue, but a global challenge.
“The crisis concerning elderly care is not limited to Aruba; it is receiving attention worldwide.”

For that reason, the parliamentarian stressed that Aruba must think beyond the present:
“We cannot remain focused only on what we are doing right now; we must already plan for the next 3, 5, and 10 years.”

Kelly praised the minister’s efforts to work toward a concrete policy that seeks not only to ensure high-quality care for the elderly, but also to strengthen the position of professionals and care homes that provide these essential services.

“Our elderly built the country we have today. They deserve respect, attention, and dignified care,” concluded Dennerich Kelly.
“As AVP, we will continue to focus on this issue to ensure that Aruba’s care system continues to grow in quality and sustainability.”
