Parliamentarian Rocco Tjon: Addressing suicide and prevention requires action, not excuses

Rocco Tjon

In recent times, Aruba has increasingly been confronted with news related to suicide and suicide attempts. Behind every case lies deep suffering and families left behind with many questions. Could this have been prevented? The growth and visibility of these tragic cases point to a worrying development that cannot be ignored.

Suicide is a social challenge. Mental health, social pressure, and access to help all play a central role. For that very reason, the government — and specifically the minister responsible for Public Health — carries a great responsibility. Prevention, early detection, and sufficient capacity within the mental health sector must be priorities.

GOVERNMENT HAS NOT ALLOCATED ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE

Taking this into account, it is regrettable and alarming that Minister Mervin Wyatt Ras has indicated that he will not allocate additional resources to this sector. In both the 2025 and 2026 budgets, motions to allocate more funding to mental health care were rejected by the factions supporting the government.

WHAT POLICIES AND PROGRAMS HAS MINISTER WYATT RAS INTRODUCED?

This position does not align with the growing signals coming from the community, nor with the already well-known pressure on this sector and its professionals. Acknowledging a problem without investing in solutions is not a solution. The situation raises even more questions when considering the minister’s political past. When he was a parliamentarian, he was a strong critic of the management of mental health care and stated that he had all the solutions. Now that he holds executive responsibility, he must indicate what he has concretely changed to address the current situation.

QUESTIONS FOR THE MINISTER

For this reason, 40 questions have been submitted to the minister. These questions are specifically directed at the concrete actions taken by the minister since assuming office. What measures have been implemented? What new initiatives have been launched? How much additional funding has been allocated?
