The Statia Government, in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, has committed to co-funding road safety improvements under a 50/50 agreement. The initiative will focus on school zones and high-risk areas, enhancing critical infrastructure to improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists.
This will include the installation of additional public lighting, clearer road markings, enhanced traffic signs, pedestrian crossings, and speed bumps where necessary to regulate traffic flow and minimise risks.
Government Policy Advisor for Infrastructure, Andre Brissett, in collaboration with Marc van der Seijs, an Advisor on Sustainable Mobility & Behaviour from the consultancy firm “&Morgen”, held a series of stakeholder meetings with the Executive Council, educational institutions, emergency services, heavy equipment operators, rental car owners, and residents. These discussions helped shape the project’s priorities.
Marc van der Seijs was assigned to conduct a risk assessment of school zones and high-risk areas. His findings will contribute to a detailed project plan and funding request under the Dutch national road safety programme.
Once the co-funding from the Netherlands is approved, work is set to begin soon after, with full implementation expected after the 4th quarter of this year.
