46% of Aruba population suffers from obesity, focus must shift to prevention

Obeso

Recent alarming figures regarding the health of our community have come to light. According to shared data, no less than 46% of the population in Aruba is considered obese. This reality is knocking on the doors of health institutions, urging a change in direction where prevention must become the primary priority to guarantee a healthier future for the citizens.

Guidance and Medicine as Support Tools According to the Minister of Public Health, Mervin Wyatt-Ras, guidance and medicine must serve as support tools. One of the concrete steps taken is the decision to reinstate the full “package” of medicines. The goal behind this is not only to supply medication but to use it as an entry point to guide citizens in a more preventive direction. “We must look for alternatives that truly help our citizens,” Minister Wyatt-Ras explained, highlighting that the combination of necessary medicine with structural guidance is what will make the difference.

The Fight Against “Junk Food” Propaganda The fight against junk food propaganda is a reality. One of the greatest challenges identified is the enormous amount of advertising to which citizens are exposed daily. Messages stimulating the consumption of products such as chips, French fries, and hamburgers are everywhere, making the choice for a healthy life much more difficult.

To counteract this, the new program seeks to provide citizens with the necessary “tools” so they can decide on their own future. The idea is that by providing structure and education, individuals can resist marketing pressure and opt for what is best for their bodies.

Positive Public Response Although there was significant skepticism and doubt at the beginning regarding whether such a program would yield results, the reality now shows otherwise. Citizens themselves are coming forward to express that this support and guidance have a positive effect on their lives. This confirms a great need for programs that do not only treat symptoms but attack the root of the problem: the lack of prevention and the increase in obesity figures.

With nearly half of our population facing weight issues, the call is clear: the focus on prevention is no longer an option, but an urgent necessity for the well-being of Aruba
