Emergency services were deployed on Thursday evening following an explosion at the national headquarters of the D66 party on Lange Houtstraat.
Upon arrival, officers were unable to enter the premises immediately. Based on reports that an individual might be injured inside, police attempted to force entry through the front door. The fire department was also dispatched for a “suspected fire” and assisted in gaining access to the building.
The force of the blast blew the letterbox off the door, launching it across the street. A police spokesperson confirmed that an explosion did occur within the building. While there is minor internal damage, no injuries have been reported. Initial fears regarding a casualty inside proved unfounded, as the building was empty at the time.
Neighbors alerted authorities after hearing a loud bang followed by the sound of falling debris. D66 has since confirmed that the incident appears to have been caused by a heavy firework thrown into the building. A suspect was reportedly seen fleeing the scene. A police mobile fencing unit has arrived to secure the perimeter for further investigation.
