El parlamentario Frenciss Lourens, de la bancada de MFK, dirigió preguntas al ministro de Tráfico, Transporte y Planificación Urbana, Charles Cooper, sobre las construcciones, demoliciones e intervenciones visibles en el acantilado rocoso de Playa Jeremí.
Según el sr. Lourens, Playa Jeremí y su zona costera forman una parte importante del patrimonio natural y del paisaje de Curazao. Por ello, cuando ocurren construcciones u otras intervenciones directamente en la costa, debe existir claridad de que todo se realice conforme a la ley y teniendo en cuenta la seguridad, la naturaleza, el medio ambiente y la vista de nuestra franja costera.
El hecho de que un terreno sea privado no significa que se pueda realizar cualquier intervención sin respetar las normativas. Nuestra costa es parte de la imagen y del patrimonio de Curazao, y el gobierno tiene la responsabilidad de vigilar que se proteja el interés general.
En sus preguntas formuladas con base en el artículo 96 del Reglamento de Orden del Parlamento, el sr. Lourens pide al ministro aclarar si existen permisos para los trabajos en Playa Jeremí, qué autoridad los otorgó y si lo ejecutado coincide con lo aprobado. El parlamentario también desea saber si antes de la intervención se investigaron las posibles consecuencias para la estabilidad de la roca, la seguridad, la naturaleza y el medio ambiente.
Lourens solicita además al gobierno explicar hasta qué punto puede intervenir, aun tratándose de un terreno privado, en caso de resultar que una construcción o demolición viole los términos del permiso, ponga en peligro la seguridad o cause daños a la naturaleza.
Otro punto crucial es la protección del carácter natural de nuestra costa. Según el sr. Lourens, lugares como Playa Jeremí no solo tienen valor para los habitantes de Curazao, sino también un alto valor recreativo y turístico. Por esta razón, pide claridad respecto a las reglas vigentes para la construcción e intervención en los acantilados directamente sobre la costa.
Finalmente, el parlamentario pide al ministro que las autoridades competentes realicen una inspección en el sitio a corto plazo. Si se comprueba que no se actuó según el permiso o la ley, el sr. Lourens desea saber si el gobierno está dispuesto a tomar medidas para corregir la situación y, donde sea legalmente posible, hacer restaurar el acantilado o el área costera.
“El desarrollo es importante, pero debe ir de la mano con el respeto a la ley, la seguridad y la protección de nuestra naturaleza. Lo que hagamos con nuestra costa hoy es lo que dejamos a las futuras generaciones”, concluyó el sr. Lourens.

Member of Parliament for the Movementu Futuro Kòrsou Fraction: Playa Jeremí under scrutiny
Member of Parliament Mr. Frenciss Lourens of the MFK fraction directed questions to the Minister of Traffic, Transport, and Urban Planning, Charles Cooper, regarding construction, demolition, and interventions visible on the cliffside at Playa Jeremí.
According to Mr. Lourens, Playa Jeremí and its coastal area represent an important part of Curaçao’s natural heritage and landscape. Therefore, when construction or other interventions take place directly on the coast, there must be clarity that everything is done according to the law, taking into account safety, nature, the environment, and the scenic view of our coastline.
The fact that a plot of land is private does not mean that any intervention can be carried out without adhering to regulations. Our coastline is part of Curaçao’s image and heritage, and the government has a responsibility to ensure that the public interest is protected.
In his questions submitted under Article 96 of the Rules of Order of Parliament, Mr. Lourens asked the minister to clarify whether permits exist for the works at Playa Jeremí, which authority issued them, and whether the completed work matches what was approved. The MP also wants to know if the potential consequences for cliff stability, safety, nature, and the environment were investigated prior to the intervention.
Lourens also called on the government to explain the extent to which it can intervene, even on private property, if a construction or demolition turns out to violate permit terms, jeopardize safety, or cause environmental damage.
Another key point is protecting the natural character of our coastline. According to Mr. Lourens, places like Playa Jeremí carry not only value for residents of Curaçao, but also significant recreational and tourism value. For this reason, he requests clarity regarding the rules governing construction and interventions on coastal cliffs.
Finally, the MP requested that the minister order the competent authorities to conduct an on-site inspection in the short term. If it turns out that actions were taken without valid permits or against the law, Mr. Lourens wants to know whether the government is prepared to take enforcement measures and, where legally possible, require the restoration of the cliff or coastal area.
“Development is important, but it must go hand in hand with respect for the law, safety, and the protection of our nature. What we do to our coast today is what we leave behind for the next generation,” Mr. Lourens concluded.
