The Department of Public Health (DVG) is maintaining strict surveillance due to an increase in measles cases worldwide and in various countries around Aruba. Authorities are issuing a warning to the community planning international travel, as there is a real risk of contagion when visiting areas with outbreaks of measles or dengue.
Symptoms of measles include:
• High fever
• Watery eyes
• Coughing and throat irritation
• A rash on the face that later spreads to other parts of the body
For individuals planning to travel or who have been in contact with someone with measles, the importance of contacting their family doctor by phone to receive the necessary instructions is emphasized. In today’s world, where many people travel between different countries, cases are increasing, and in Aruba, we must stay informed and take precautions.
The community is being informed, especially the hotel sector and those working in tourism. In collaboration with ATA, DVG is sending a letter informing about measles symptoms and what to do in case a visitor, employee, or tourist presents symptoms while in Aruba or upon returning to their country.
It is important to keep in mind that Aruba is a tourist destination, and although we do not have cases of zika, chikungunya, or dengue cases like other countries, we must remain alert to any outbreak imported through travelers.
Regarding local prevention, the community is urged to stay alert for stagnant water when it rains. Any small amount of water can become a breeding ground for dengue or other parasites. It is vital to:
• Keep the mosquito population down
• Avoid the accumulation of water in yards and around the house
• Protect the community against transmitted diseases
DVG is aware that many locals have gone on vacation abroad, but it is important that upon returning home they take note if they feel unwell or experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.
