“As the innkeeper is, so he trusts his guests”
It is with genuine disappointment that I have taken note of the public accusations made by the MPB faction regarding the purchase of a plot of land in Santa Clara. Let me be direct and absolutely clear: I dismiss these accusations entirely. Integrity is not a political slogan to me; it is the foundation of who I am and how I carry out my work.
Recused from Day One
Yes, it is true that the parcel in question once belonged to my late uncle, Mr. Julian Abraham. But precisely because of that family connection, I did what any responsible and ethical official should do: from day one of the process, I formally recused myself from the decision-making.
What does “recusal” mean in politics? It is simple: it means that, as an official, you withdraw from all discussions, deliberations, and the final decision on any matter in which you have a private interest (or even the appearance of one). I did not participate in negotiations, I did not deliberate, and I did not vote on this purchase. That is the standard of integrity I uphold.
Why ‘Heavy Industry’ plots are crucial for Bonaire
The MPB mentions the price but conveniently omits the real societal importance. Bonaire urgently needs affordable housing and infrastructure. To reduce costs, we need more competition in the construction and infrastructure sectors.
For that reason, there is high demand for plots designated for “Heavy Industry.” The Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) currently does not have such plots available. By purchasing strategic parcels, the government can issue long-lease rights to more companies, which leads to increased production, more competition, and ultimately lower prices in the construction sector. The purchase is therefore in the public interest of every citizen who wants an affordable home.
Clarity and the Need for Action
It is a sad situation. I must conclude that what political opponents often say about others more accurately reflects their own way of acting, thinking, and doing—and what they seek to project onto others. The saying “As the innkeeper is, so he trusts his guests” unfortunately applies here.
Had Council Member Thielman respected the Code of Conduct and the Gentle Agreement of the Island Council—the rules we all agreed to—he could have quietly and confidentially asked the Governor for clarification and would easily have learned that I formally recused myself from this matter. Instead, he deliberately chose to inflict public damage.
For the sake of clarity, and to do justice to my integrity, I have requested that the Governor initiate an independent investigation.
I deeply regret these unfounded accusations and will take the necessary steps to protect my honor and good name.
