RIVM Submits report on environmental pollution and living environment in Bonaire

Boneiro

Several known sources of environmental pollution exist in Bonaire, including improper waste processing, fires at the landfill, and littering in public spaces and nature. The Public Entity of Bonaire (PEB) aims to gain deeper insight into these pollution sources and their impact on the living environment and the health of residents.

Research by RIVM During the 2025-2026 period, the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) conducted an exploratory study on environmental pollution and health in Bonaire. The study consisted of:

  • An assessment of existing and potential sources of environmental pollution;
  • A working visit to engage with relevant stakeholders and observe the local situation;
  • A perception study, allowing residents to share their experiences and concerns regarding pollution and potential health issues through a survey.

The findings have been compiled into a report providing recommendations to the PEB for subsequent steps. As of Wednesday, April 22, the report is available on the RIVM website.

Key Environmental Themes and Recommendations The research highlighted several priority areas: waste management issues at Lagun, water, soil, and air quality, illegal dumping, dust and noise nuisance, and health in relation to pollution. The most significant concerns involve the growing waste mountain and recurring fires at the Lagun disposal site.

Urgent Measures Required at Lagun Residents living near the landfill have long experienced health issues. During fires, they report shortness of breath, coughing, and eye irritation. RIVM emphasizes that short-term measures are essential, such as properly covering waste, improving processing, and preventing future fires. Additionally, RIVM recommends monitoring hazardous substances released near the site and conducting further research into the well-being of neighboring residents.

Conclusion and Next Steps The Executive Council takes the RIVM’s recommendations seriously and will deliberate on how to integrate these findings into policy and execution. The goal is to formulate concrete steps to reduce the impact on people, animals, and nature. The PEB remains committed to a transparent process, keeping the community informed about the progress of these essential measures.
